An endurance test for five women who, after overcoming breast cancer, proved that it was possible to cover a long distance on MTBs in the Annapurna Valley, the deepest valley on the planet, in the Nepalese Himalayas, at more than 4,000 metres above sea level.
How:
The 4th edition of the Pelayo Vida Challenge took five Spanish women, Begoña, Silvia, Lorena, Cecilia and Noelia, who had suffered and overcome breast cancer, to the Nepalese Annapurna Valley, where they covered more than 300 kilometres on mountain bikes at an altitude of more than 4,300 metres above sea level covering the distance between the cities of Pokhara and Lo Manthang, the capital of the forbidden Kingdom of Mustang. This challenge was a test of personal growth, psychological strength, courage and optimism in the face of life, despite the fact that they had overcome a serious illness. These five women give voice and visibility to the actual possibility of overcoming breast cancer and being happy after defeating it. They send a message of hope to women who have suffered or are currently suffering from it and encourage them to overcome the disease through sports and healthy eating.
Why:
246 women who had suffered from cancer, including Spaniards living abroad (Italy, United Kingdom, United States and Japan), applied for the selection trial. After the four editions of the Pelayo Vida Challenge, 526 women have now taken the test after overcoming cancer.
The spokesperson and expedition member of the Pelayo Vida Challenge, Begoña Valderrama, stresses:
“Rather than an illness, I call it my opportunity to change my life and turn it into the perfect place where I want to live”. She also encourages “all women diagnosed with breast cancer to fight with optimism and courage and to include sports and healthy eating as the basis of their healing along with medical treatment”.

HEAD OF THE EXPEDITION
Linked to the world of cycling, he started competing late, while always combining sports and studies. He competed in road cycling until 2006 in the elite category. That year he decided to turn his life around, i.e. to work for and bring cycling closer to everyone instead of competing. He worked on several training projects in schools and universities for years, even directing several master’s degrees related to sports.
His work and life go hand in hand. The bicycle has taken him around the world. He has participated in mountain bike races all over the world: Mongolia, South Africa, Morocco, New Zealand, Canada, United States, Chile and now also in Nepal.
